This week in class we worked on a non-digital project creating storyboards. For this project we created a character and drew different views of them from the front, side, and back. They all had to be proportional so you could see exactly how all the parts of the character fit together. We then wrote some information about the character and then created a storyboard for that character.
Storyboards are a layout of what will happen in the story of a video game, movie, animation, or other visual media. They are like the blueprint. You cannot build something without a clear idea of what you are doing, or it will end in disaster. Storyboards help people in game design and the film industry plan out the story, mainly showing how the character moves around the scene, and what they interact with. Storyboards also help designers clearly show their ideas to others, so another person could make the final product. I found this website quite useful in summarizing the importance of storyboards, especially how they should focus on the visuals, not the dialogue, as storyboards are sometimes confused with comics. LINK: https://resources.goanimate.com/what-is-a-storyboard-and-why-do-you-need-one/ Things to keep in mind about storyboards: -Focus on movement (What is the character doing, and where are the cameras?) -No dialogue -Saves you time -Speeds up the production process

What are Game Mechanics? They are the interactions and relations that create a game after removing the aesthetics, technology, and storyline. SpaceThe boundaries of a game. Defines the places that exist in the game and how they interact with one another. TimeThe limitation of when things occur. Consisting of discrete and continuous time. Discrete: Players take turns. Continuous: Players compete at the same time. ResourcesThe objects the player uses to win the game, such as game pieces, weapons, vehicles, or moves. RulesThis is the most important game mechanic. It makes all the other mechanics possible. It defines objects, space, timing, actions, consequences, limitations, and the goals of a game. SkillThere are three very important types of skills; physical, such as strength, dexterity, and coordination; mental, mainly involving memorization; and social skills, having the ability to influence people and make friends. ActionsThings that a player can do in a game. There are two types: Strategic and Basic Actions. Basic actions are actions like starting a game, progressing through the game, and winning. Strategic actions are how players use basic actions in their own creative ways to win. ChanceThe uncertainty or randomness in a game. Some resources of chance are dice, spinners, coin flips, and random number generators.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Games have more to them than meets the eye. -What are game mechanics? -Space -Time -Resources -Rules -Skill -Chance -Actions What is Mafia 3:Mafia 3 is a singleplayer, open world game by Hangar 13, that takes place in the turbulent year of 1968. You play as Lincoln Clay, an african-american in his early 20's, who recently came back from the Vietnam War. When he gets back, he learns his family is in a lot of trouble. The setting is in the fictional american city of New Bordeaux, a copy of New Orleans. Pros:-Quality 1950s and 1960s music -Highly detailed city, plenty of places to explore -Lots of vehicles -Realistic combat -Player-NPC interactions make the world more alive -Portrayal of late 1960s, Vietnam War, racial bias (sadly, but makes it more historic, helps show the tense time) Cons: -The map always seems hazy -Chrome on cars is overly shiny -Driver AI (people randomly getting out of cars in middle of street) -Lag -Game crashes -Repetitive missions Explanation:For the pros, there are a lot of famous songs from the 1950s and 1960s, such as ones by the Beach Boys and The Four Tops. The city has plenty of places to explore. You can go in secret tunnels, mazes of alleyways, houses, warehouses, restaurants, laundromats, clubs, and other businesses. Next, there are over 60 cars, trucks, and boats to drive. Also, the NPCs love to talk to you as you are walking around, even though sometimes it might not be so nice. A major con for the game is that the map seems dirty and hazy, which gives off depressing vibe. Also, the chrome on cars seem overly shiny, and it can hard to see the details on them. In addition, the AI drivers will drive their cars into lamp posts, and randomly get out of their cars in the middle of the road, and sometimes cars will randomly explode. The game also lags and crashes a lot. Lastly, the missions seem repetitive. To take over a district, you have to always interrogate and kill people, usually with one or two guards and almost always in a parking lot, and it is very easy to do so. It would be nice if you could break into their homes to get some of them. When you take over the district, to raise the racket's income, you have to steal goods from rednecks in the bayou. Rating:Graphics: 7/10 Music: 9/10 Cinematics: 7.5/10 Story: 6/10 Content: 6/10 Controls: 9/10 Gameplay: 7.5/10 Conclusion:I think this game is a great game if you like open world games. Even though the story slightly repetitive, there is plenty to do and explore.
