Why do I write blogs? I write blogs for a grade in my class. But they are not written just for that. They are written for me to reflect on material and techniques I have recently worked on. They help me look at the bigger picture. They are also for my website visitors so they can learn about what I am doing and the history, techniques, and other subjects revolving around the gaming industry. The Format: I have to follow a format for all my blog posts. I must choose a specific topic, tool or technique recently discussed in class. Then, I explain why I wrote it about this topic, and look up more information about it. Why I wrote this blog post: So you, the reader, could learn why I do a blog
-It's not just for a grade. -I write blogs to expand my knowledge and the readers knowledge. -I have to follow a format. -They relate to the industry of game design.

The Controversy: Video games have been causing controversies since the 1980s, especially the game Mortal Kombat. People thought it was very violent as it was two people fiercely fighting, with realistic punching and kicking sounds. Also, when you would defeat your enemy, you would either kick them and they would fall to their death screaming, or rip out their organs. This violence led to many court causes, and countries censoring or even banning the game. Nintendo released a censored version without blood, and SEGA released the game with a MA-13 rating. People flocked to the SEGA's uncensored version because, well, they wanted to see gore. The Creation of the ESRB: This game, along with Night Trap, a game about a crazy house party gone bad, led to the U.S. Government in 1993 holding a meeting about the government regulating games. Officials and supporters of regulations said that new games on the market promoted violence, and were sexist and racist. Other countries, such as Germany, deemed to game too harmful for young people. In 1994, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) was created. Games created in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada would have to, and still do, send their games to the ESRB to get a rating before they are put on the market. If the game is more violent than the creators say it is, they could get into trouble. The ESRB have the ratings RP, E, E+10, T, M, A0. Today: Today, games still cause controversy. Games, such as GTA V, let you run around killing innocent people, steal cars, get drunk, get high, and have intercourse. People have fun doing these things, and people say you should not have fun doing this. GTA V is rated M, so most people who play it are adults. Still, there is an ongoing debate on whether games should let the player do these things.
-The game Mortal Kombat caused controversy. -The controversy led to the creation of the ESRB. -Today, violence in video games is still debated over. This week was a very peculiar week. Usually in class we are vigorously working to get a complex project done in just a few days. But this week was very relaxed. Our assignment was to play Evoland, a videogame emphasizing the history of videogames. I think this is why most people took this course, because they thought they would be playing games all year, but only those who made it to the second level of Game Design got to do this. I felt like it was an award after making it to the next level. But while playing Evoland, we were supposed to take notes and pay attention to the advancements in the game, as they correspond to advancements in videogames in the real world. You watch your character go from a group of gray pixels to a highly detailed, 3D character exploring a large open world. In addition, it was a fantasy game I actually liked, as I am not really into that genre. On another note, we also studied gaming trends. I was glad to see that people wanted split screens to come back to console, as I have many controllers and only two games that have split screen. Also, another gaming trend is Virtual Reality, it is becoming so popular that it might create a new generation in the gaming world. People want to not see see and hear, the game but, to feel it, to wear it. They want to feel the bullets, crashes, and the explosions. Also, there are concepts of even being able to make calls in Virtual Reality, so you don't have to leave your game, and even have 3D video chat.
-I got to learn the history of videogames in a videogame. -I learned good things come to those who work for it. -Split screens are making a comeback. -Virtual Reality is the new way to play. Oh, here is the link to Evoland: http://evoland.shirogames.com A new school year has begun. I am now experiencing the trials and tribulations of Game Design. For the first week of school, I made an infographic summarizing what I learned last year. I made three graphics as an example of what I made last year too. I created a solar eclipse drawing in Adobe Photoshop, a black cat in Adobe Illustrator, and a grey spaceship in 3DS Max. I then explained how to make these items. Next, I listed what we learned one year ago, the basics of technology. Parts of a computer and how they work, and their history.
Main Points: -Created an infographic showing: -A review of how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, and 3DS Max. -Summarized the main topics we covered at the beginning of the year. |
